- Health Matters: Today I'll talk on the subject which is confusing me from a couple of months; in today's world wherever we go: we find the the products saying "Multi-Grain", "Whole-Grain", "Oragnic", "Healthy"...so on and so forth.....so let me clear your doubts.

When it comes to type of bread, do you think multigrain bread is the healthiest choice? It may seem that way since its name implies that it is made from many grains. However, the catch is that even multigrain bread may not necessarily be whole-grain bread. In fact, unless it specifies that it is 100% whole wheat or 100% whole grain, it may still be made primarily from white flour...

...According to the United States Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) website, the FDA "has not defined any claims concerning the grain content of foods. Depending on the context in which a "whole grain" statement appears on the label, it could be construed as meaning that the product is '100 percent whole grain.'" However, the FDA does recommend that products labeled with "100 percent whole grain" not contain grain ingredients other than those the agency considers to be whole grains (i.e. only whole wheat flour and no enriched bleached (white) flour).

I tell clients to do the same thing that the FDA recommends to consumers-- look for whole wheat or whole-grain flour listed first on the product's ingredient list. Since ingredients are listed in the order that they occur in a product, spotting whole wheat or whole grain first on a label means that is what the product is predominantly made from.

However, it is important to be aware that "wheat flour" is not the same thing as "whole wheat or whole-grain flour." The difference is whether the grains in the product have been refined or left whole. Most refined grains lose 78% of their filling, heart-healthy fiber as well as half its vitamins and minerals in the milling process.

So make sure that your bread or bread product says it is 100% whole wheat or 100% whole grain rather than just "wheat bread" or "multigrain bread". Then you'll be 100% sure you've made a healthy choice!
